Great writing deserves to come alive in the room. Action Fiction! is a live literary performance series where local actors bring short fiction by contemporary writers off the page and onto the stage. Expect surprising voices, strange stories, and the magic that happens when writers hand their work to performers with no strings attached.

Join Scott Lambridis (St. Ulphia’s Dead) and Yance Wyatt (The Watersmith) for an evening of fiction and conversation, moderated by Ben Black, assistant fiction editor at AGNI.
The authors will share passages from their new novels and discuss their inspirations, writing processes, and the challenges and pleasures of bringing unusual fictional worlds to life. From science and mythology to dark humor, love, and the unexpected turns a story can take, the conversation will explore what draws writers toward the strange—and what happens when they follow it.

The Science of Longing — What would make you believe the impossible?
What happens when the desire to know becomes inseparable from the desire for something to be true? We like to imagine reason as solid ground, but grief, love, memory, and loss can make the boundaries between evidence, belief, obsession, and hope much harder to see.
In their debut novels, Scott Lambridis and Yance Wyatt explore characters confronting realities that strain the explanations available to them. Their conversation will move between psychology, science, faith, mythology, and the impossible to ask what makes a belief reasonable, where skepticism becomes its own kind of certainty, and whether emotion distorts inquiry or gives it urgency. At stake is a deeply human question: when ordinary explanations fail us, what are we willing to believe in order to keep making sense of the world?

Weird Science, Strange Beliefs, and the Impossible
In celebration of the release of their new books, three novelists discuss the pleasures and perils of making the impossible believable. From alternate histories and afterlives to strange science, mythology, and dark humor, Scott Lambridis (St. Ulphia’s Dead), Martha Conway (We Meet Apart), and Yance Wyatt (The Watersmith) explore how fiction destabilizes what we think we know—and what becomes possible when writers allow uncertainty to remain unresolved—in a conversation moderated by writer and critic Olga Zilberbourg.
The authors will share brief passages from their new work that speak to the evening’s theme, then dig into genre, research, belief, and the craft of making an impossible premise reveal something emotionally true.
